Every mystery has a story, a suspect list and four clues. Students read and spell words with one phonics skill to solve each clue. The clues build on each other until the class can name who did it. Each case gives your readers focused practice on one skill.
Why I made these
I loved mystery books as a kid. I'd read every page looking for the clue that cracked the case. I made these mysteries so students get that same feeling while they practice the phonics skill they need. They're so busy solving the case, they forget it's word work.

Eleven mysteries. Each one has teacher instructions, the mystery story, a suspect list, four clues (word scramble, crack the code, picture puzzle and maze), a solution sheet, an answer key and workstation folder materials.
How to Use
Print the pages and make copies. Read the mystery story together so everyone knows what went missing. Students look over the suspect list, then work through the four clues. Each clue is a word scramble, a crack the code, a picture puzzle or a maze, and each one uses the target skill. When the clues are done, students use what they found to solve the case. Check their work with the answer key.
It works for small groups, partners, or students working on their own. You can also set it up as workstations with the folder materials included.
